Contemplating a First Saltwater Fly Fishing Trip

Contemplating a First Saltwater Fly Fishing Trip
With winter fast approaching, now is the time when many people start planning a saltwater fly fishing trip. At On The Water Fly Fishing Travel trout anglers who want to take their first saltwater fly fishing trip often ask us, “What would be a good first trip”? With so many great places to go it is difficult to come up with just one location. The bonefish flats of the Bahamas are a rite of passage and an incredible experience, Grand Slam fishing in Mexico can be very rewarding and there’s nothing like casting to a school of happy tarpon in Cuba. We recommend that you don't pass up the chance to travel to any of these destinations and experience the great fishing they offer.

But if you’re sitting at home, watching the snow fall or preparing for it to fall, and dreaming of a first saltwater fly fishing getaway, we have a few recommendations. First, in southern Louisiana, you don’t have to be able to cast or spot fish like a pro to have a legitimate shot at catching a monster redfish. If you see a fish and make a decent cast, odds are, it’s going to eat your fly. Since redfish are not terribly spooky you often get the chance to ‘try ‘em again’ if your first shot falls a little short. You cannot say that about permit, tarpon, or even bonefish.

As with most saltwater fly fishing, the Louisiana delta fishery can be fickle at times. Weather or water clarity might not always work in your favour, and it certainly is not tropical fishing in January. However, if you are into food, music, and history, there is always plenty to do down in New Orleans if you need to take a day off from fishing. The best time to go, to catch large bull redfish cruising the in-shore waters is in the mid to late fall. We offer a great package at a historic southern Louisiana plantation, right near all the best redfishing action.

Our second top choice for a first saltwater fly fishing destination is Belize. This small Central American country offers a relaxed atmosphere, tropical weather, English speaking guides and the triple threat of bonefish, tarpon and permit fishing! For a first trip, El Pescador Resort on Ambergris Caye is perfect for getting your feet wet, so to speak. The Lodge offers a full complement of knowledgeable and patient guides who are ready to help anglers of all skill levels up their game. This area also happens to have a multitude of flats where happy fish are just waiting to make your acquaintance.
